At the start of 2020, the FA commissioned Matt Small to produce a collection of 27 portraits of the current England football squad and manager and were displayed throughout the Euro 2020 tournament at England’s official training ground, St George’s Park.
The artworks are a celebration of what the team has come to represent, inclusion, diversity and acceptance. The players themselves hail from a variety of backgrounds from all across the country and have become a symbol of an England that belongs to every race, religion and ethnicity.
Each portrait was painted using a multitude of swirling intermixing colours to illustrate the dynamic individuality of each squad member alongside a geometric St. George's flag background constructed from individually cut wood panels showing that as a team they are all united in their desire to do the country proud.
This is England was purchased by Moniker Foundation in May 2022. JG Contemporary manages the collection for Moniker Foundation.
